City of Hamburg
As a city state, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is one of the states of the Federal Republic of Germany. With just short of 1.8 million inhabitants, it is the second largest city in Germany. Hamburg is also regarded as Germany’s «capital of the press» since the head offices of many internationally renowned publishers are based here.
Hamburg is situated in Northern Germany, at the mouth of the river Alster. In the city center, the Alster is retained to form an artificial lake before it splits into the larger «Aussenalster» and the smaller «Binnenalster», which is surrounded by the historical heart of the city. There are more than 2500 bridges spanning the city’s numerous canals, streams and waterways.
Hamburg attracts over four million visitors each year, making the city one of Germany’s greatest tourist magnets. Popular destinations include the harbour and HafenCity, the Reeperbahn, St. Pauli landing stages, "Hamburg Dom", the largest funfair in Northern Germany as well as internationally renowned museums and galleries such as the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Bucerius Kunst Forum and the city’s theatres, of which there are more than forty.
